Invisible Borders

National borders are deeply rooted and cause political divisions. These borders are intrinsically linked to the concepts of inclusion and exclusion, identity and belonging, us and them. We often see borders as essential for our sense of self and security, but these constructs are neither stable nor permanent. In fact, not so long ago, they didn’t even exist in many places.

Invisible Borders is a collaboration between Berlin-based photographer Mireille van der Moga and Dutch artist Tineke van Veen. The project explores the duality of a new European reality: the simultaneous dissolution of borders and the corresponding extension of boundaries beyond the continent through surveillance technologies. It also questions the very value of national borders.

In an era of boundless internet, skewed demographic and ecological developments, and escalating border conflicts, maintaining borders seems increasingly illogical. Could a freer flow of people—such as we once had—serve everyone’s interests?
Isn’t the foundation of human progress rooted in movement, exploration, and unfortunately, exploitation? How will recent changes to immigration laws, paired with the use of AI, ensure the protection of fundamental human rights for refugees, migrants, and citizens alike?
