About

Tineke van Veen is a Dutch artist based in The Hague, whose work bridges the relation of post human landscape and humans, the environmental and cultural perspective. Her research and fieldwork on remote locations as radioactive sites is translated in film, photography, installations and objects. In addition to her artistic practice, she undertakes various curatorial activities, provides lectures at different academies and is founder of the Gueststudios in DCR, The Hague and co-founder of WondersonWork.

In her art-practice she visualises the concept of safety, safety related to vulnerable situations in a personal and in a broader intercultural context. It reveals the importance of understanding safety in a way that takes into account both vulnerability and resilience.

'Vulnerability. For Tineke van Veen this is a keyword. Her work is always balanced on the boundary between harm and preservation, safety or disaster, aggression or consolation.' Els Fiers

Her latest work concerns the disturbed relationship between humans and the environment. The film- and photo-projects 'Aware' (Fukushima, Japan, 2014) and 'Unsettling Dust' (Fort de Vaujours, France, 2016-2021) wishes to focus on the intimate and the sense of alienation of the nuclear contaminated landscape. The projects wish to explore the lived, bodily experience of radiation and question what it means to live with the threat of invisible contagion today. By providing reflections on place and subjectivity, it point to larger phenomena that underlie visible landscapes as well as stimulate discussion on how to acknowledge and responsibly address the consequences of the nuclear age.

Experimental Filmproject Low Level Legacy

Started in 2023, in cooperation with Felix Schuster

Low Level Legacy is the title of a new, unconventional short experimental film installation inspired by a current social and political issue: low-level nuclear waste. Art has the unique ability to critically and openly represent pressing societal and political topics in its own way. At the moment we are still researching, we hope to start the filmproject the 1st of June 2025.

Filmproject Unsettling Waste

Started in 2023, in cooperation with Nie und Immer Studios, Berlin, DE

A repository for highly radioactive waste is intended to last for a period of one million years. This is longer than the entire history of humankind - a time span that is difficult for us as humans to comprehend. Through conversations with children, philosophers, scientists, artists, and engineers, the film explores what radioactive waste means for us and for future generations.

Exhibition Dear Time TABLOO, Dessel, BE

18.9.2025 - 04.01.2026

NIRAS, the National Organization for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials, is hosting the exhibition Dear Time, Beste Tijd, Cher Temps at its visitor center, Tabloo, in Dessel. The guest curator for the exhibition is Michel Dewilde from the curator platform Art2B (Ghent).

The exhibition brings together perspectives on the fascinating concept of time and its relationship with the management of radioactive waste. It also highlights the scientific research and knowledge-sharing efforts surrounding the solution NIRAS is developing for the long-term management of low- and intermediate-level short-lived waste. A key goal is to foster reflection among the general public on preserving and passing down knowledge to future generations.

Dear Time, Beste Tijd, Cher Temps is a thematic group exhibition featuring the work of various contemporary artists alongside a selection of cultural objects from the collections of several prominent national museums. Artists include Maarten Baas, HeHe, Manon Clement, Emilio Lopez-Menchero, Cecile Massart, Taryn Simon, Maarten Vanden Eynde, Tineke van Veen, and others.
